Much thanks to the internet and google, there is plenty of information, reviews & blogs around televisions from all walks of life for a common user to know much more about features, pricing and technology when it comes to TV’s or any product these days.

What is typically hard to find up until now are the insider manufacturing trade secrets. The idea of this blog is to inform buyers about TV technology and manufacturing information which is hard to come by and not advertised on purpose by the TV companies.

In particular we look at the TV panels (LCD/LED) and what it means for you. Typically TV panels are the most expensive component of the TV assembly and if they are defected there is no way to troubleshoot. It effectively means you have to go and buy a new TV unless it’s under warranty and is classified as a manufacturing defect.

Typically big brand names like Samsung and LG are the biggest suppliers of TV panels and most TV’s in the world will have a panel from either of the two companies. So how does quality and pricing works for the TV panels?

It’s like anything else and a bit more volatile when it comes to pricing of the TV panels. Typically the rates are set on minimum order quantities (MoQ’s), demand and supply factors. Most often leading upto holiday periods like Christmas due to increase in demand, the panel prices increases. So it becomes a challenging job for the TV companies to set their prices accordingly in an already existing competitive market. Yes, it true margins in TV retail markets are not as high as some would like to believe. Typically around 5 to 15% and depending on promotions, stock clearance etc this can be even lower. And that is good news for the astute TV buyers.

In terms of TV panels, they often come in various quality ratings like A+, A, A-, B, C etc. This fact is not widely advertised and where companies like to increase their margins by selling lower grade panels without the customer knowing about it. Normally customers don’t focus or think about the TV panel quality as they more or less all look the same to an uninformed buyer.

For a quality astute buyer what do these ratings mean? Take a look at the table further below which compares the panel quality by its ratings.

In a nutshell, from A+ to C, the quality of the panel acceptance criteria degrades which means issues are more likely to manifest for the lower grade panels. The other fact is TV’s are not designed to last you a life time which is like anything else. So it pays to be a quality focussed buyer, be informed and make sound choices when investing your hard earned money expecting your TV’s to last for a reasonable time period.

There is nothing like the A+ panel quality grade and it pays to invest in it. Often you will find fancy terms and definitions for TV features to lure customers into thinking they are getting the best of everything. It’s not necessarily the case often when it comes to TV panel quality which is by the way the most important component of your TV and viewing experience!

You will find hardly any TV feature or specs talk about the panel quality as often manufacturers will use lower grade panel and package to a higher end product with fancy features, half of which are quite standard and some not required at all! And they end up charging you a premium price by using lower quality components and lift the profit margins up. It’s quite normal for TV manufacturers to use B or even C grade panels and upsell with their big brand image out in the market.
